The east rim of the Voragine Crater

Our little being on the east rim of the Voragine crater. In the center of this picture our tent which was destroyed during the night by violent storms. What a welcome!

Down at the flows!

 

The really exciting view from the Voragine at the base of the NE-Cone. Three main lavaflows brought apprx. 10 m^3/sec down into the Vale del Bove ( information from B. Behncke ). The length of the streams nearly 3 km.

On the flows at the 5th of June

              

 "Fresh, Lava"

During the morning hours a clinking crashing sound let suddenly appears this new effusion of lava in the middle of the big field. Because the flow moved to the border we got the possibility to come very close ( zero meter ) to this hot stuff. In an altitude of 3050 mNN the sun in the nearly zenith position is much  intensive and brighter as down in the valley. In spite of this, the slugging lava was glowing strongly red through the partial stiffing surface which was breaking and tearing all the time.

I think one of the biggest stove you can get in this times. On the left you see two pieces of lava grilled meat ( not Ingo or me ) which taste was incredible. OK...  with the sandstorm made crumb we had little chewing problems. The right photo shows a total failed try to bake a cake.....

 

The baker

The 7th  June of 2001, ca. 3.00 - 4.00 a.m.

The eruption was documented by only one photo which was taken from the camp ground Mareneve ( 11 km distance ,eastern direction ). From this eruption a new episode of the Southeast crater began. May the birthday edition with a new vent?  The Levantino?

The bright spots are stars in the violett illuminated sky and not the result of a dirty scanner surface! Tip, the camp grounds swimming pool on the right corner a is a very good observation point.!!!
