Between the fascination of a natural spectacle..
- and destruction
This historical volcanic event on La Palma is hard to
express in words, since I have not observed this
dimension of the inner earth force after my observations
at Etna 2001.
The first impression after arriving in Palma Las Cruzes
(airport) and through the east-west tunnel was a ramp in
the eastern part of El Paso at a supermarket. At
first glance, the comparison of an Apollo rocket rammed
into the ground upside down came very close. This is a
very vague comparison, but you are first faced with such
an event yourself.

With an unprecedented force, gas and slag material was
'propelled' up to 400m under high pressure of the main
vent of Cumbre, and this
incessantly with a nearly annoying roaring noise.
Distance about 2.5 km. No real crater formation could be seen
here yet.

Los Llianos de Adriane

09/24;
No lava flow in sight yet, but a torch made of gas and
slag in behind the settlements of El Paraiso in the
dimension of about 600m

At the beginning, outblown magma was pulverized in
the gas vent by the high pressure that only small
fragments of lava could be seen, + annoing extrem noise.
The mighty ash column about 5000m even created its own
'weather'

Extreme high fontains, calculated over field viewing
angle up to 1000 m eter or higher.
I had last seen it on Etna on February 15, 2000 with Tom
and Marco.

First horizontal fontain video of the world ;-)
.. because the 16 x 9 format is unfortunately nearly
useless in these dimensions!

The opening of the first lava bubble / spring
apprx. 50m, 09/24

This bubble increased immensely in a very short time but
dried up again and reactivated itself on the evening of
September 25th.
09/25, in the streets of Laguna with the new towns landmark, an
oversized pillar of fire.

But on October the 26th, the
message comes that the city is currently being destroyed
by a new lava flow.

The gas fountains
at 09/28

Suddenly these gas fountains appeared . This event lasted
about 30 minutes.
Here only burning gas was emitted at a height of about 200m.
A spectacular sight!
Strato cloud

The buoyant plume in
combination with the heated air- masses of the
volcano Cumbre d. V.
created a so-called Strato cloud (sphere)
which is estimated at a height of 10? Km
